Answer These Questions Before Creating Your Disaster Recovery Plan

Businesses large and small create and manage large volumes of electronic information or data and most of that data is important. Some of the data is vital to the survival and continued operation of the business. The impact of data loss or corruption from hardware/software failure, human error, hacking, malware or disruptive weather conditions could be significant. A plan for data backup and restoration is essential.

Here are some important questions to answer before you and your teams begin developing a Disaster Recovery Plan. Taking time to give focus to these questions will result in a well- defined, streamlined DR Plan that could mean the difference in how your business comes through a disaster.

Have the primary personnel resources clearly been identified before an event?

What’s the risk associated with downtime or loss of access to a business application? Time based assessment?

What happens to the data in certain scenarios? Customer/employee information? Unique business data?

Has a recovery point objective (RPO) or data loss threshold been established for each application?

What are the possible causes of outages? Which are most likely?

Are recovery time objectives (RTO) in place for each application?

Do protected applications have different levels of protection?

If DR is in place today, when was the last test? What was discovered?

Are in place data security standards in tact during the event and recovery from the event?

Does the plan fall within compliance thresholds?
